3M awards KC nursing stethoscopes

Published: Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

Five first-year nursing students at Kishwaukee College were the recipients of Littmann Stethoscopes from the Community Support Group at 3M. Mike Ryan and Jon Pruitt, co-chairmen of the 3M Community Support Group, and Donna Engh, 3M Community Support Committee member, were on campus on Sept. 11 to award the stethoscopes to the students.

The nursing students who received Littmann stethoscopes are: Caresse Aboyure, DeKalb; Alex Dolister, Lee; Rebecca Giroux, Steward; Fred Hornbuckle, Cortland; and Chad Rowcliff, Cortland.

The Community Support Group is the local arm of 3M that provides charitable assistance and support. Although the national 3M Corp. provides recognizable support in a variety of ways including scholarships to Kishwaukee College and other educational institutions across the country, the Community Support Group is designed to be community-specific by volunteering, assisting and donating in ways that are unique to the local community.

Mike Ryan’s wife, Sheila, is a 2006 graduate of the nursing program at Kishwaukee College. He recalled the expense of a outfitting a typical nursing student. Nursing students must purchase uniforms and the medical equipment they will need, including stethoscopes.

In 2010, Ryan suggested the Community Support Group award Littmann stethoscopes to several deserving first-year students in Kishwaukee College’s nursing program in the fall and spring semesters. The Littmann Stethoscope is manufactured by 3M and is considered the “Cadillac” of stethoscopes.

This fall is the fifth semester visit to the Kishwaukee College campus for Ryan, Pruitt and other 3M representatives to distribute the Littmann stethoscopes to deserving nursing students. They look forward to many more visits in the future to assist the students who have chosen nursing as their profession.
