DeKALB – Today is the final day to register for Northern Illinois Newspaper Association’s 50th anniversary conference, headlined by veteran journalist and government watchdog Andy Shaw.

Shaw, head of the Better Government Association, will address the culture of corruption that has often characterized politics and government in Illinois during the conference Oct. 18 at the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center.

“[Shaw] now shines a bright light on the unsavory and shadowy in Illinois government,” said Dirk Johnson in a release from the newspaper association. “We are honored to welcome him in discussing the role of journalists in watching the foxes near the chicken coops.”

Shaw spent 37 years covering politics, business and education and general assignments for City News Bureau, the Chicago Sun-Times, NBC 5 and ABC 7. He was ABC 7’s political reporter, retiring after President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009.

The event, which is co-sponsored by the NIU Department of Communication, is open to the public. Tickets are $25, with a cash bar and dinner. Those interested should call Maria Krull at 815-753-0707 today.
