The Taylor University Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Albert Harrison, will present a sacred jazz concert at Shabbona United Church of Christ at 7 p.m. Friday. The public is invited.

The Jazz Ensemble has a variety of selections of contemporary, sacred and praise music written in swing, Latin, rock, and funk styles. The 20-member big band features saxophones, trombones, trumpets and rhythm section performing contemporary styles of music with featured student soloists.

The ensemble performs frequently in schools, churches and reformatories and has been a 10-time participant in the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival.

“We like to offer these types of concert experiences to allow our area youth an opportunity to learn more about potential colleges,” Pastor Jim Allen of Shabbona United Church of Christ, said in a news release. “Of course, we older folks love the smooth sounds of American jazz!”

The focus for this particular concert is to prepare for next year’s ministry tour in Cuenca, Ecuador, where the ensemble will perform under the auspices of the Verbo Iglesia Cristiana (Verbo Christian Church) in both sacred and secular venues. Financial support is being raised for this tour and a free-will offering will be collected at the concert.
