DeKalb man charged with child abduction

SYCAMORE – A man charged in August with public indecency now faces an additional charge of luring a child into his home.

John M. Adler, 40, of the 100 block of Cobblestone Court in DeKalb, was charged with child abduction. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison. He appeared in court Thursday via closed-circuit TV from the DeKalb County Jail. According to court documents, Adler intentionally lured a child into his home in July “without the consent of a parent ... for other than a lawful purpose.”

Adler was arrested in August on four counts of public indecency after he was seen committing lewd acts in his car in the parking lots of Target, Walmart and Kohl’s, all on Sycamore Road.

When police began investigating Adler, DeKalb police Lt. Jason Leverton said they received information from his neighbors about suspicious activity. In one instance in July, Adler asked an 11-year-old girl if she wanted to see his pool. While she was on Adler’s property, he asked the girl if she wanted to make some extra money by doing some gardening work for him. The girl told her parents, who were suspicious of the contact, Leverton said.

Adler later made a second attempt to have the girl come into his garage, Leverton said.

Police felt the charge was necessary based on their previous contact with Adler.

A warrant was issued Wednesday for Adler’s arrest, with bond set at $75,000. He will appear in court again Nov. 13.
