FAA: Small plane from Tennessee crashes in Gary, Ind.

GARY, Ind. – Officials say a small plane has crashed about a mile south of the Gary/Chicago International Airport and at least one person is dead.

Federal Aviation administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory says in a recorded statement that a small plane originating in Smyrna, Tenn., crashed Wednesday morning south of the airport bordering the Indiana Toll Road just south of Lake Michigan.

Cory says in a recorded statement that "the local coroner will identify the deceased."

The Times of Munster reports the Lake County Coroner's office confirmed it was called to the scene but had no information to release immediately.

Neighborhood resident Hattie James says the plane landed behind a fire station and a charter school.

Gary police spokesman Cpt. Gabrielle King describes the scene as "chaotic."
