Egyptian Theatre hosts candidates event

DeKALB – Residents will have a chance to hear local candidates speak on different issues today, about a month before the election.

The DeKalb Chamber of Commerce will host Candidates Night at the Egyptian Theatre starting at 5:30 p.m. The event will feature an hourlong meet-and-greet where residents can talk to candidates about issues and concerns before those in contested races take the stage.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., candidates in contested races each will give a three-minute introductory statement and then a two-minute closing statement.

No questions or debate will take place on stage, but alternating introductory and closing statements should allow for some back and forth, said Matt Duffy, executive director for the chamber.

Duffy said the format should work well as residents can have one-on-one time with candidates and ask direct questions during the meet-and-greet.

There are 18 candidates confirmed for the event, Duffy said, including 23rd Judicial Circuit hopefuls Bill Brady (R) and Ronald G. Matekaitis (D); state’s attorney candidates Clay Campbell (R) and Richard Schmack (D); and Tom Demmer (R) and Tom Boken Jr. (D) who are vying for the 90th District seat in the state House of Representatives.

Also scheduled are the regional superintendent candidates and candidates for DeKalb County Board Districts 8, 9 and 10. WLBK-AM 1360 will carry a live broadcast of the event.

Steve Kuhn, chairman for the DeKalb County Republicans, said the event is a good opportunity for residents to get to know those running on both sides of the ticket. He said he is hoping attendance is stronger than previous years.

“Its a great way to air some of the concerns and hear what the candidates have to say,” he said. “All the local candidates have been quiet so far, so it should be interesting.”
