Suspect arrested in Friday robbery in DeKalb
SYCAMORE – A man police say was involved in one of two robberies that occurred last week in DeKalb appeared in court Monday.
Anthony Phillips, 22, of the 800 block of Russell Road in DeKalb, was arrested Saturday and charged with robbery. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison. He appeared in court via closed-circuit TV from the DeKalb County Jail.
About 5 a.m. Friday in the 900 block of Greenbrier Road in DeKalb, police met with a robbery victim and his girlfriend. The victim said they were hanging out with Phillips and another man when the girlfriend and Phillips got into a disagreement, according to court documents.
When the girlfriend began walking back toward the apartment the four had come from, Phillips struck the victim in the face; the other suspect kicked him while he was on the ground.
One of the men said “we are taking this” referring to the victim’s wallet, according to court documents. The girlfriend said the victim’s face was bloody.
Phillips, who was identified as wearing a red and white letterman-type jacket and had the word “heartless” tattooed on his neck, was later seen at University Village, and officers noticed the tattoo on his neck, according to court documents.
DeKalb police Lt. Jason Leverton said police continue to investigate leads and hope to get a warrant for the second man’s arrest.
Phillips, who said he is a student at Kishwaukee College, has a pending charge of domestic battery, was sentenced to prison for residential burglary and has multiple prior convictions, including criminal damage to property and theft, said Prosecutor Julie Trevarthen with the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert set bond at $75,000 and appointed the public defender’s office to represent Phillips. He will appear in court again Oct. 18.
Leverton said police also continue to investigate another robbery that occurred in the same area about 11 p.m. Thursday, when a man took food being delivered by a Lukulos Restaurant delivery driver after striking him in the head.
The suspect was described as a black man about 6 feet tall wearing black pants and a black jacket with white sleeves and a diamond on the back. Anyone with information about the incident can call DeKalb police at 815-748-8400.
