PREP ROUNDUP: Mooseheart tops Hiawatha football

MOOSEHEART – After falling to Mooseheart, 35-0, Saturday, the Hawks  are now 2-4 overall and 2-4 in the Northeastern Athletic Conference. Hiawatha will need to win its final three games in order to become playoff-eligible.

Dale Steinhorst led the Hawks in rushing with 28 yards. Quarterback Mike Mercado went 15-of-25 passing with 164 yards and an interception. Allen Letterer caught four passes for 101 yards.

BOYS SOCCER

H-BR gets homecoming win: Hinckley-Big Rock got a Little Ten Conference victory over Newark on homecoming, winning 8-0. Bill Weissinger had four goals for the Royals, while Forrest Grivetti had two and Bernie Conley and Jack Bullard added one each.

H-BR is now 15-3 and 6-1 in conference play.

Cogs, Rockets play to draw: Genoa-Kingston tied Richmond-Burton, 1-1. Devon Tijerina had the lone goal for the Cogs, and was assisted by Erik Tomlinson. G-K is now 11-5-1 overall and 5-4-1 in conference play.

“In the second half we pressed them in the attacking third and we got off several quality shots, but just didn’t get them past their keeper,” G-K coach Randy Tate said.  “They are a good team, but I thought we outplayed them the majority of the game.”

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Kaneland first at Freeport: Kaneland won the Freeport Pretzel Invite with 31 points. The Knights’ Kyle Carter won the individual title with a time of 15:23.55. Conor Johnson was third (15:34.01), while John Meisenger took sixth (15:57.83).

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Clinton leads Knights: Victoria Clinton finished first for Kaneland at the Freeport Pretzel Invite, coming in with a time of 17:18.70. The Knights took first overall with 35 points. Brianna Bower took third for Kaneland (18:50.16), and Abby Dodis was fourth at 18:58.94.

BOYS GOLF

Barbs 13th at tourney: DeKalb finished 13th at a tournament hosted by LaSalle-Peru at Senica’s Oak Ridge, finishing with 332 points. Ben Melms led the Barbs with an 82, while Ryan Schultz and Jacob Cook each shot 83.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Co-op tops Morris: The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op team beat Morris, 124-45, winning each event.

Bailey Flemming won the 200-yard  freestyle and 100 butterfly, while Jensen Keck was victorious in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.

Kylie Olson won the 50 and 500 freestyle for DeKalb-Sycamore, with Alexa Miller taking home the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke titles.

“Overall it was just a very solid meet for our girls,” DeKalb-Sycamore coach Leah Eames said.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Sycamore loses in title game: Sterling squeezed out a 26-24, 30-28 win over Sycamore to win the 16-team Sterling Invitational at Westwood Sports Complex.

The second set found the Warriors down 24-22. Sterling fought off two set points and finished the comeback on their fourth set point on the second straight hitting error by the Spartans (9-6).

Sycamore topped Metamora in the semifinal.

LATE FRIDAY
Cogs lose: The Genoa-Kingston football team dropped a Big Northern crossover game, 28-7, to Winnebago on the road Friday night.

Derek Polkowski got things going for the Indians when he pulled in a 31-yard TD pass from Ryan Swigart. Jacoby Posley made it 13-0 with a 52-yard run.

Tay Shanklin raced in from 37 yards out to make it 21-0 at the half, then added a 5-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to cap ‘Bago’s scoring.

Gabe Williams’ 70-yard punt return in the fourth quarter accounted for G-K’s scoring.

Shanklin finished with 75 yards rushing on seven carries as Winnebago outran the Cogs 281-62. Eli Thurlby led G-K with 47 yards on 16 carries.
