Feds: Alleged Chicago drug ring leaders arrested

CHICAGO – The U.S. attorney's office in Chicago says two alleged drug ring leaders have been arrested as part of a nationwide effort to root out traffickers.

Thirty-nine-year-old Jesus Ramirez-Padilla and 26-year-old Humberto Jiminez were among 27 people arrested around the country Thursday and charged with drug offenses.

Authorities announced the charges on Friday and say a total of 39 defendants are facing drug charges in the investigation.

They allege that Ramirez-Padilla and Jimenez led their own drug-trafficking organizations that bought and sold powder cocaine on Chicago's southwest side. But the men allegedly sometimes supplied each other with the drug and took steps to avoid detection. That included using code words, regularly replacing telephones and using different vehicles to transport drugs.
