Sycamore firefighters to wear pink

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Fire Department is ready to bring in fall fashion with new uniforms for a good cause. Throughout October, Sycamore firefighters will wear their standard navy blue shirts with a pink twist to raise awareness for breast cancer during the month dedicated to combating the disease.

The shirts will have pink lettering on the front and back, with the “i” in “fire” replaced by a pink ribbon.

Firefighter Adam Honiotes said it is the first year the department will feature the specialty uniforms as an extension of the work firefighters do to raise awareness about the disease throughout the year.

“We’re really wearing them more as a billboard,” he said. “It’s just about raising awareness.”

The shirts are one of many ways firefighters have reached out to the community, especially when it comes to breast cancer awareness. In June, firefighters participated in Sycamore’s Ladies Night and sold more than 300 pink T-shirts in about an hour. Honiotes said he even sold the shirt off his back that night.

“I didn’t even get out of my Jeep,” Honiotes said of the rush for the shirts. “We ended up raising about $1,800 this year.”

The department also participated in a “Hug a Hunk” event that sold hugs for breast cancer research, and firefighters annually volunteer for the Relay for Life event.

Honiotes said community service is important to the department, and he is honored and proud to be a part of the events each year. He said for those looking to help with breast cancer research, pink T-shirts are available for purchase through the Sycamore Fire Department.

“We can get as many of them as anybody wants,” he said. “We’re always happy to get some more made.”
