Program on closing gardens for the season

What you do in your garden this fall can greatly affect your harvest next year, according to University of Illinois horticulture educator Candice Miller. Fall is an excellent time to till compost or manure into your garden, clean up any leftover weeds and start a compost pile, for example.

University of Illinois Extension will offer a one-hour program,”Putting the Garden to Bed,” at 6 p.m. Thursday at the extension office, 1350 W. Prairie Drive in Sycamore. The cost is $5 and registration is preferred.

Miller will discuss fall activities such as planting for a winter harvest, proper sanitation and pest control methods to prepare for next season. Extension Local Food Systems and Small Farms educator Ellen Phillips, will discuss cover crops and techniques for season extension.
