DeKALB – DeKalb police are searching for suspects after they say a man had been stabbed and victims in two other incidents said they had been robbed.
DeKalb police Lt. Jason Leverton said police were alerted to a stabbing at 4:20 a.m. Friday. A victim, who said he was attacked while walking to 7-Eleven from his Ridge Drive residence, told police that two men jumped him while he was cutting through the parking lot of Campus Cinemas, in the 1000 block of Blackhawk Road in DeKalb.
Leverton said the victim tried to defend himself against the two men and apparently succeeded in fighting them off. A motorist driving by saw the incident and stopped to yell something out the window, which Leverton said seemed to scare the suspects, who ran off.
The victim noticed a stab wound in his side and was transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, where Leverton said he remained hospitalized Friday morning with a punctured lung.
The suspects did not demand any money or take anything from the victim, and the victim said he did not know them. The suspects were described as about black men about 6 feet tall. One was wearing a navy blue hooded sweater and the other was wearing a blue jean jacket.
About an hour later, police responded to a report of a robbery at the corner of Greenbrier and Russell roads in DeKalb. Leverton said a male and a female couple were walking in the area with two other men they had just met around 5 a.m.
The female walked farther ahead of the group and the two people the couple had just met robbed the male victim of his wallet. The victim said the suspects hit him in the head and kicked him, and he suffered minor injuries.
One suspect was described as a black man, 6-feet tall wearing a red and white jacket, black pants and a baseball cap. The second suspect was described as a black man 5-feet, 10-inches tall wearing all black, including a black coat and black hat.
Paul Palian, a spokesman for Northern Illinois University, said victims in both of those robberies were not NIU students. NIU police issued a safety bulletin Friday morning advising people to temporarily avoid the areas where the incidents occurred, which were both in the Greek Row area.
Leverton said DeKalb police responded to another robbery in the same area around 11 p.m. Thursday when they said a man took food being delivered by a Lukulos Restaurant delivery driver.
The driver was on foot cutting through the lot between 1110 and 1120 Varsity Boulevard in DeKalb when a suspect hit the delivery driver on the side of the head and took a bag of food. Leverton said the driver was not seriously injured and continued to work his delivery shift.
The suspect in that robbery was described as a black man about 6 feet tall wearing black pants and a white jacket.
"At the moment, we're investigating these as separate incidents," Leverton said. "There's some similarities of descriptions, but they're also ... a little bit vague."
Leverton said police are following leads and looking into camera footage that may have captured the crimes. He said no arrests have been made yet.
