County unemployment falls to 7.8 percent

DeKALB – DeKalb County's unemployment rate fell again in August to 7.8 percent.

This marks the third consecutive month the county's unemployment rate has fallen since June, when unemployment peaked for the year at 9.1 percent, according to preliminary data released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

However, both the county's labor force and employment numbers have dropped from July to August. In July, there were 55,225 workers employed out of a labor force of 60,396. In August, only 54,788 workers were employed out of 59,420.

Unemployment has also dropped statewide, with the rate going from 9.3 in July to 8.9 in August.

The Chicago Metro area, which includes numbers from DeKalb County, saw an increase of 35,000 nonfarm jobs between July and August. This region also saw its unemployment rate drop from 10.5 percent in August 2011 to 8.8 percent in August 2012.
