Christian Connection, the Christian store at 337 W. State St. in Sycamore will host a community food drive in cooperation with Salem Lutheran Church and Sycamore United Methodist Church during Christian Store Week, Sept. 28 through Oct. 8.
Additionally, a special enhanced CD compilation will be available for a $5 donation to raise awareness of the need for food assistance and support World Vision U.S. food and anti-poverty programs.
“Because of the continuing recession and continued high unemployment, there is a growing need for local families and children to rely on community support,” Shari Malm of Christian Connection said in a news release. “We want to help meet that need.”
Government agencies report one in five U.S. children live in poverty and the rate of families who are “food insecure” has risen 30 percent since 2006, totaling more than 17 million families.
The 18-title CD, “Lift Up: Artists and Authors Unite to Feed America’s Hungry Children,” features Christian songs, Bible, books and more. Musicians, artists, authors, retailers and publishers have donated royalties and all fees and profits plus provided in-kind services so 100 percent of donations are available for program support.
As part of the campaign, Christian Connection will host a book signing by Christian award-winning author Maureen Lang at 1 p.m. Oct. 6. She will sign copies of her new book “Bees in the Butterfly Garden.” Other events and activities for Christian Store Week include: a bake sale on Saturday to support the Mason Court afterschool program, daily drawings, and sales throughout the store.
