DeKalb freshman Maggie Russell shot an 87 to finish second at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament at Rochelle Country Club.
Russell’s 87 was the best round of her season.
“My irons were the strongest part of today,” Russell said. “I was more consistent on all of my shots.”
Russell will start the postseason with regional play Oct. 3 at Freeport.
Kaneland’s Julie Vangemert took 11th place with a 102.
Royals get win: Emily Hermann shot a 51 for Hinckley-Big Rock in a 216-226 victory over St. Edward. Taylor Prellberg fired a 53 for the Royals and McRaye Sheller had a 55.
“Hermman and Prellberg came into [Tuesday’s] meet hungry for a victory,” H-BR coach Greg Jourdan said. “Both girls are focused and ready to jump into the postseason.”
T’Wolves top ACC: Lauren Frances medaled for Indian Creek, shooting a 44 as the Timberwolves beat Aurora Central Catholic 203-269. Virginia Filicetti had a 49 for Indian Creek (8-9) and Samantha Bergstrand shot a 53.
Spartans get NI Big 12 victory: Sycamore defeated Rochelle, 25-15, 25-13. Hannah Knox finished with eight kills for the Spartans while Brittany Huber added seven. Emily Young had five kills and three aces while Ratasha Garbes added 21 assists and Christina Dailey 10 digs. The Spartans are now 8-4 and 3-2 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.
“We’re starting to put things together,” Sycamore coach Debbie Klock said. “Our middles are starting to produce.”
Knights fall: Yorkville beat Kaneland, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17. Ellie Dunn led the Knights with 10 kills, five blocks and an ace. Lyndi Scholl had eight kills and five digs while Emily Loudant finished with six kills, six digs and an ace. Ashley Prost had 25 assists for Kaneland, which is now 12-6 and 2-3 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East.
H-BR tops Indian Creek: Hinckley-Big Rock defeated Indian Creek, 5-25, 25-20, 25-23.
Lauren Paver had eight kills, seven blocks and seven digs for the Royals, while Abbie Tosch finished with five kills and five blocks for H-BR. Beth Klein had 15 blocks and six digs.
Kate Thuestad had 10 kills, nine digs and three aces for the Timberwolves, while Dallas Boehne finished with 22 assists. Ariel Russell had 11 digs for Indian Creek and Alyssa Arends had 15 digs.
“You’ve got to give Hinckley credit for playing the second and third game with a lot of confidence after the first game,” Indian Creek coach Stephanie Crutcher said. “We’ve got to come out and play to win after that first game.”
Indian Creek is now 7-8 and 2-3 in the Little Ten Conference.
Hawks lose Little Ten match: LaMoille beat Hiawatha, 25-17, 25-23.
Dani Clark had 10 kills, nine digs and three blocks for the Hawks, while Savanna Campbell added 22 assists.
Hiawatha is now 5-9 and 1-3 in the Little Ten.
Humes big for Bobcats: Somonauk’s Allison Humes finished with 14 kills and 12 digs as the Bobcats beat Paw Paw, 25-13, 21-25, 25-20. Payton Orzech had 13 assists and four aces for Somonauk.
Kaneland shuts out Sycamore: Anthony Parillo and Alex Gil scored goals for Kaneland in a 2-0 win over Sycamore. Sam Rymarz and Jason Biddle had assists.
The Knights are now 8-2-2 and 3-1-1 in conference play.
Spartans win NIB 12 East title: Angelina Ye won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles as Sycamore beat Rochelle 5-0 to win the Northern Illinois Big 12 East title.
Alexa Farris got a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles for the Spartans. Caitlin Mereness and Aspen Paulson won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Melanie Findlay and Alyssa Gregorec got a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. Kathryn Sullivan and Lauren Lundbeck won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
“The girls played very well,” Sycamore coach Dave Hillmer said. “They finished up the season with conference nicely.”
Knights beat Yorkville: Sammie Schrepferman won, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 1 singles for Kaneland in the Knights’ 4-1 victory over Yorkville. Madi Jurcenko and Jelly Emmanouil won, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, while Jenna Bicos and Jess Woodward won, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles.
The Knights’ team of Colleen Landers and Stephanie Karol won, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles.
“Another good conference win,” Kaneland coach Tim Larsen said. “Sammie won a tough, close one today. She didn’t play her best today, but pulled through in the end.”
H-BR falls: St. Edward defeated Hinckley-Big Rock, 158-207. The Royals were led by Austin Scott, who finished with a 50. Tyler Runge finished with a 51 and Daniel Small had a 52.
Hargrave leads Bobcats: Aaron Hargrave shot a 43 for Somonauk as the Bobcats lost to Westminster Christian, 182-186. Alex Moyer had a 45 for Somonauk.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Herrmann 33rd for Cogs: Zach Herrmann finished 33rd for Genoa-Kingston at the Matt Walter Invite. Herrmann came in with a time of 17 minutes, 22 seconds. Teammate Coty Waxman took 53rd at 18:38. The Cogs finished 10th as a team with 257 points.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Kurpius leads G-K: Genoa-Kingston senior Renae Kurpius finished in 33rd place at the Matt Walter Invitational, with a time of 21:26. The Cogs’ Nicole Hebel was 35th at 21:39 and Amanda Murray took 47th with a time of 22:42.
Genoa-Kingston took 10th as a team with 230 points.
