Prep roundup: Sycamore girls tennis gets 13th win
Sycamore girls tennis beat Sterling, 3-2, on Monday. Angelina Ye won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, and Aspen Paulsen and Caitlin Mereness won, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles. Kathryn Sullivan and Lauren Lund-beck got Sycamore’s third point, winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
The Spartans (13-1-1) face Rochelle today in their last Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East match.
“We’re looking to win that, ... and we have to think about the conference tournament, which is coming up in a couple weeks,” Sycamore coach Dave Hillmer said.
DeKalb rolls again: The Barbs defeated Harlem, 5-2, in a nonconference match. Taylor Volk won, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, and Sabrina Killeen and Samantha Volk combined for a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Mary Ellen Green (No. 2 singles), Nilema Patel (No. 3 singles) and Katrina Le and Maria Marungo (No. 3 doubles) also earned points for the Barbs.
“We have won our last three dual meets and are gelling at the right time,” DeKalb coach Lance Gackowski said. “Hopefully we can maintain the momentum as we enter tournament time.”
Somonauk cruises past Mooseheart: The Bobcats made quick work of Moose-heart, winning, 25-11, 25-6.
Payton Orzech had five aces and Jacquelyn Thorp recorded seven kills to lead the Bobcats (9-10).
G-K closes strong: The Cogs defeated Rockford Christian, 25-20, 25-22. Bridget Halat had 14 assists and Olivia Cotton recorded 13 digs. Vanessa Garza had seven kills and 11 digs, and Sam Hansel chipped in with six kills.
“We put ourselves in positions where our backs are against the walls,” G-K coach Keith Foster said. “I’m waiting for the team to play consistently for an entire match, but they’re finishers.”
The Cogs are 14-9, including 4-2 in the Big Northern Conference East Division.
Indian Creek defeats Paw Paw: Matt Shroka recorded a hat trick and Aaron Bolton added two assists as the Timberwolves won, 4-3, and their second Little Ten Conference game.
Carlos Sanchez had the Timberwolves’ (6-11, 2-5 LTC) other goal. Jeremy Potter made 16 saves in net.
“We played well as a team and controlled the ball well, made some very nice passes in the midfield and created several scoring opportunities,” Indian Creek coach Eric Schrader said. “Jeremy Potter made a great save toward the end of the game to save the win for us.”
H-BR clobbers Byron: The Royals got four goals from Billy Weissinger and two goals from Eric Phillips in their 7-0 victory over Byron. H-BR (14-2, 5-1 LTC) also had two assists and a goal from Bernie Conley.
The Royals play at Princeton today.
Hiawatha edged by Somonuak: The Bobcats defeated Hiawatha, 3-2. Tommy Skupieu scored two goals, and Trevor Siegler added one for Somonauk (13-2-2).
The victory clinched the LTC title for Somonuak, which wins the regular-season title with a mark of 7-0.
