To the Editor:
This the first time we have ever written a letter to the editor. Since DeKalb High School has opened in its new location on Dresser Road, the Heatherstone Subdivision has been turned into a shortcut speedway to the high school.
Thank you to the DeKalb Police Department for its presence in helping young motorists slow down.
Normally we would stop with that and ask the young drivers to remember their Junior Barbs are learning to cross streets to get to their schools safely and to please slow down.
But recently, an event happened that motivated us to write this letter. A young man named Joe and his friend were cruising at a safe speed through the subdivision to get to a homecoming event at the high school. They were followed by five other high school students in cars.
Joe stopped the procession when a couple of young children went into the street, one of which had fallen off his bike. Joe and his friend helped the young boy and girl up and cross the street.
We want to thank good Samaritans such as Joe and his friend who remember that getting to their school event a couple of minutes later by driving a little slower makes a huge difference in the safety of a neighborhood. Kudos to Joe, his friend and other Barbs who are doing the right thing in our community.
