Letter: There is not a need for
gambling in Sycamore

To the Editor:

I want to address the issue regarding gambling being allowed in Sycamore. Before I go any further, I want to make it clear: I am against it.

Have you ever taken the time to visit areas that allow gambling? Do they ever appear to be the type of neighborhood that you want to live in? I don’t.

If the area organizations need additional funding for their projects, then perhaps we as a community can address that subject with them with either direct participation with fundraising or by becoming members.

As for the thinking that “DeKalb would probably do it if we don’t,” we have to stop thinking like that. Both cities could benefit from each other instead of worrying about what the other city might do or not do. I would hope our city administration would not even consider this way of thinking when it comes to making any decision, let alone this one.

We need more ideas to attract visitors as well as more businesses and jobs. Both situations create more of a reason to come to Sycamore and generate revenue.

Saying there is any “need” for gambling, that doesn’t make it a solution, it is a cop-out.
