Latter-Day Saints provide 'day of service'

Members of the Sycamore Ward and DeKalb Ward (or congregation) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints recently held a “Day of Service” at two locations in town, Safe Passage and Oaklawn Cemetery on North First Street.

The Sycamore Ward delivered and spread mulch around the buildings at Safe Passage. They also provided a deep cleaning of the office, children’s center and counseling areas. More than 50 adults and youth participated in the event.

Church members have cleaned these areas weekly for the past three years but decided to gather more members to do a deep cleaning. The church joins other churches and service organizations that have provided Safe Passage with various maintenance projects in the past.

The trees and bushes at Oaklawn Cemetery were trimmed and cut back and some headstones were repaired by the DeKalb Ward. More than 20 members brought their chain saws, shovels and rakes to help beautify this historic cemetery behind the First Congregational United Church.

Some of the neighboring woods have encroached on the property over the last few years and they were cut back to protect more of the gravesites in the northeast portion of the property.

It was a perfect day with sunshine and mild temperatures making it a pleasant time to work and socialize while providing service to these valuable community organizations.
