Wheel-A-Thon gets set to roll around DeKalb

Published: Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

DeKALB – DeKalb County RAMP leaders are raising awareness about disabilities for the 12th year in a row Saturday with their annual Wheel-A-Thon.

The event is similar to a walk-a-thon, only participants are encouraged to get around on a set of wheels, whether it’s a wheelchair or a pair of rollerblades. Runners, walkers, strollers, bikes and scooters also are welcome. The theme is “Roll on the Wild Side.”

Money raised helps support DeKalb County RAMP’s mission to “promote an accessible society that allows and expects full participation by people with disabilities.”

Visit dekalbcountywheelathon.stayclassy.org to register a team or donate to RAMP. Anyone who raises at least $50 receives a T-shirt and incentives from local businesses.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. Contact RAMP Manager Heather Foulker at 815-756-3202 or email her at hfoulker@rampcil.org for more information.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Van Buer Plaza in downtown DeKalb at the corner of Locust and North Second streets. The Wheel-A-Thon begins at 10 a.m., and lunch and awards are afterward.
