Sox face tough test against Tigers' Scherzer

CHICAGO – With their lead in the American League Central sitting at two games, the must overcome one of the AL's best starters, right-hander Max Scherzer.

Scherzer (15-6, 3.85 ERA) starts tonight for the Tigers, his fifth versus the Sox this season. In four starts versus the Sox, Scherzer is 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA. He has struck out 32 batters in 25 innings pitched.

The Sox counter with Gavin Floyd, who makes his first start since landing on the disabled list with a right elbow flexor strain. He last pitched Aug. 26 versus Seattle, lasting two innings before exiting with the injury. Floyd (9-9, 4.55 ERA) has pitched well against the Tigers. He is 7-2 with a 3.42 ERA in 19 career starts against Detroit.

Adam Dunn (strained right oblique) will miss his sixth consecutive game. He took swings two different times before today's game but still felt a "grabbing" in his oblique. Dan Johnson starts at designated hitter and Orlando Hudson gets the start at second base in place of Gordon Beckham.

The Sox have flipped their outfielders. Alejandro De Aza is playing left field tonight while Dewayne Wise starts in the center field. Manager Robin Ventura said De Aza feels more comfortable playing in left field.
