Sycamore receives grant for new instruments

Published: Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

The Sycamore High School Music Department recently received a grant from the Sycamore Education Foundation to purchase marching percussion and two full-size basses.

“We currently have a large number of students studying bass, so we did not have enough full-size basses for everyone to play on,” orchestra director Ken Tonaki said in a news release.

“The middle school has never had full-size basses; we have always played on smaller scaled instruments. With this generous grant, we now have enough basses to fully supply both the high school and middle school,” Tonaki said in the release.

The Sycamore Education Foundation also recently provided the funding to purchase percussion instruments for the SHS Marching Band.

“These marching drums will be laying down the groove for SHS football games, pep rallies, homecoming, and the Sycamore Pumpkin Fest Parade in 2012 and beyond,” Music Department Chairman Scott Mertens said in the release. “Marching band percussionists practice daily from August into October, and their equipment gets a lot of use. Our previous set of equipment was showing significant signs of wear, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep it in working order.

“Thanks to SEF’s generosity, the Marching Spartan percussionists will have quality equipment they can use for many years to come,” he said in the release.

The marching percussion equipment consists of snare drums, bass drums, tenor drums, and carrier units. In addition, drum covers were purchased for protection, and new drum stands allow students to rest their backs and practice without creating additional wear and tear on the instruments.

The Sycamore music program supports students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The Sycamore Music Boosters offers opportunities for additional contributions from grants, individuals, and local businesses and corporations.
