Prep Roundup: G-K penalty kick opens up scoring in victory

Published: Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012 5:30 a.m. CDT

A slow start didn’t stop Genoa-Kingston from attaining its seventh victory of the season on Monday.

The Cogs got two goals from Uriel Ortega and a goal and an assist from senior Devin Tijerina as G-K beat Rockford Christian, 4-1, in a Big Northern Conference East Division battle.

“We did not play well the first half,” G-K coach Randy Tate said. “The defense, with William Crozier leading the way, did a great job keeping us in the game.”

Tijerina’s penalty kick late in the first half opened the scoring for G-K (7-2, 2-1 BNC East).

The Cogs face Richmond-Burton in another BNC game on the road Wednesday.

H-BR downs Paw Paw: The Royals got another Little Ten Conference win, defeating Paw Paw, 5-1. Bernie Conley had two goals and an assist while Zach Michels added a goal and an assist. Billy Weissiner and Jared Madden had the other two goals for H-BR (9-2, 2-1 Little Ten).

The Royals will play their 1,000th game in program history at home on Wednesday against Hiawatha.

Timberwolves fall at home: Indian Creek lost, 6-0, to Earlville/Leland at home.

GIRLS GOLF

Scheller playing well for Royals: Junior McRaye Scheller shot a 54 for Hinckley-Big Rock in the Royals’ triangular with Rock Falls and Sandwich.

Rock Falls (210) won the meet followed by Sandwich (221) and H-BR (226). Junior Caitlyn Fecht shot a 55 for H-BR while Sandwich was led by junior Anna Gipe, who recorded a 47.

“Scheller has moved into the team’s second spot in the rotation,” H-BR coach Greg Jourdan said. “She has been playing with stronger competition and, as a result, her scores are improving each week.”
