SYCAMORE – After five months of planning and construction, the DeKalb Sycamore Chevrolet Cadillac GMC opened at its new location Monday in Sycamore.
The former Mike Mooney dealership located at North Fourth Street in DeKalb opened a larger facility on 1925 Mercantile Drive under the ownership of the Rydell Co., which purchased the dealership in December.
The 44,000-square-foot facility has about 240 vehicles on its lot and a capacity of almost 500. The old location could hold only 140 vehicles comfortably, executive manager Mike Haigler said.
“This was important to do for both our employees and our customers,” Haigler said of the move. “We want it to be a great experience when they come in here.”
Employees and customers should notice the improvements quickly, Haigler said. Inside the showroom, there is more space to meet with salespeople and a lobby with coffee, a fountain soda machine, popcorn and free WiFi for customers.
From a service standpoint, an express lube station will give customers the option to receive an oil change, tire rotation and minor repairs quickly. The full-service shop also has been expanded to handle more vehicles at once, and there is an automated car wash.
Erik Marshall, who worked at the old location the past eight years, said he already has seen the benefits for employees. The new facility has the updated tools and technology mechanics need to efficiently work on 2012 and 2013 models, which were difficult to service with the old equipment, Marshall said.
“It’s been absolutely awesome,” Marshall said of the move. “The company stepped right up and into the future.”
The expanded facility also means more jobs, Haigler said. When Rydell Co. purchased the dealership, it had 29 employees. Haigler said the company has already added 21 positions and plans to add 10 to 15 more in the coming months.
Along with the economic boost, Haigler said the facility gave the company the opportunity to “go green.” He said the facility will be heated by waste oil and energy efficient lights were installed.
“We’re very proud of the facility,” Haigler said. “There was a lot of anticipation leading up to it, and we like that we now have a showcase for our customers.”
