Prep Roundup: DeKalb volleyball sweeps five matches for tournament title

DeKalb girls volleyball went 5-0 on its way to the DeKalb Tournament championship Saturday. The Barbs defeated Harvard, McHenry, Elgin and Belvidere North in two games, then rallied past Burlington Central for a 25-27, 25-15, 25-18 win.

The Barbs are now 15-3 on the season.

Kaneland second at Bartlett Invite: At Bartlett, Jenny Lubic had 76 assists and Lyndi Scholl (28 kills) and Ellie Dunn (26) keyed a balanced attack in Kaneland’s second-place finish at the Bartlett Invitational.

The Knights defeated Fenton, Bartlett, Dundee-Crown and Rockford Lutheran before West Chicago scored a 25-18, 25-17 victory in the championship match.

BOYS SOCCER

Cogs fall to Burlington Central: Genoa-Kingston (6-2, 1-2 BNC East) took 1-0 lead early in the second, but couldn’t hold on in a 2-1 loss Saturday to Burlington Central.

Cris Camargo scored on a direct kick in the second half, but Central rallied and scored a goal in extra time for the victory.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Schrader finishes in the top 10: DeKalb’s Kelsey Schrader took ninth in the Class 3A race Saturday at the Peoria Invitational, completing the three-mile course in 17 minutes, 41 seconds. Danielle Dlabal was second for the Barbs, finishing in 19:30. The Barbs finished 16th as a team.

Clinton paces Kaneland girls: At Wauconda, Kaneland’s Victoria Clinton placed second individually in 18:11, helping the Knights finish second in the Wauconda Invitational with a team score of 111.

Crystal Lake Central won the meet with a score of 86; the Gators’ Sami Staples, the defending Class 2A state champ, was the individual winner in 18:08.

Brianna Bower placed 22nd for the Knights in 19:34.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Kaneland finishes third, DeKalb runner finishes fifth in Peoria: Tight pack running helped the Kaneland boys cross country team to a third-place showing in the Class 2A race at Saturday’s First to the Finish Invitational at Detweiller Park in Peoria.

The Knights runner Kyle Carter dropped 22 seconds from last season’s state meet time to take 10th individually in 15:23.

Kaneland had 184 team points in the program’s highest event finish ever.

DeKalb’s Marc Dubrick finished fifth at the Peoria Invitational with a time of 15:06 in the Class 3A race. Isaac Hiatenen was the second Barb runner, finishing in 16:19. The Barbs finished 24th overall.
