Indian Valley Theatre to stage ‘Sound of Music’

Indian Valley Theatre will stage “The Sound of Music” at the Sandwich Opera House in October.

The musical is based on the book, “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.” It features an unforgettable Rodgers and Hammerstein score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” “Do-Re-Mi” and of course “The Sound of Music.”

The play, set in 1930s Austria, portrays Maria, who is studying to become a nun, being sent by Mother Superior to the VonTrapp family as their nanny. George Von Trapp, a Navy Captain, runs a tight ship as a widower of a very large family. Although VonTrapp questions Maria’s parenting methods as his children’s nanny, he manages to fall under her spell. This causes both Maria, as well as VonTrapp, who is engaged to a Baroness, to question their life’s decisions. Their personal conflicts are overshadowed by the events in Austria as it is about to be under the control of Germany.
