ROCKFORD – A judge in Rockford has sentenced a 23-year-old Machesney Park man to 23 years in prison for his part in the 2007 murder of a postal worker during a botched robbery.
Phillip Scherer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced Wednesday in the death of 28-year-old Nicholas Halsted.
Scherer was 17 years old when he and two other teens were arrested in Halsted's death. Prosecutors said he agreed to a plea deal to avoid a longer sentence.
Authorities said Halsted died in his home from a shotgun wound to the head.
A jury in 2010 acquitted one defendant, who was 15 at the time of Halsted's death. The third defendant also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years.
