Northern Ill. man gets 23 years in 2007 murder

ROCKFORD – A judge in Rockford has sentenced a 23-year-old Machesney Park man to 23 years in prison for his part in the 2007 murder of a postal worker during a botched robbery.

Phillip Scherer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced Wednesday in the death of 28-year-old Nicholas Halsted.

Scherer was 17 years old when he and two other teens were arrested in Halsted's death. Prosecutors said he agreed to a plea deal to avoid a longer sentence.
