Akst: Assessing readiness for ultimate end
Caller ID wasn’t necessary. When the phone rang at 1:18 a.m. Sunday, I knew it was going to be my sister calling to tell me our Aunt Elaine had died.
We saw it coming. Aunt Elaine was 90, increasingly frail, and had been admitted to the emergency room hours earlier.
I’m sad about her passing, about the sickness and pain at the end, but also that she couldn’t spend her last hours with her most beloved family member: her cat, Roxie.
