The next concert in the DeKalb Municipal Band’s 158th season will be presented at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Hopkins Park band shell in DeKalb. Concerts are free.
Featured musicians are baritone Robert Abel and an instrumental duet between piccoloist Jeanne Brooks and bassoonist Martha Robinson.
Abel has a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in choral conducting and arranging. He has taught music for 28 years, primarily in Sycamore public schools, as well as giving private vocal and instrumental lessons. He is a veteran soloist with the band.
Abel has directed more than 54 musicals, most recently “Les Miserables,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Come, Messiah, Come.” His vocal selections will be “Rose Marie,” Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine” and “If Ever I Should Leave You” from “Camelot.”
Robinson and Brooks will treat the audience to the novelty “Elephant and the Fly,” by 19th century composer Henry Kling.
Not all favorite marches were written by John Phillip Sousa. Audience members will recall the sounds of Edwin Frank Goldman’s “Jubilee,“ “New Colonial” and ”Colonel Bogey,” theme music from the 1957 film “Bridge on the River Kwai.”
Light music from the 19th century includes “La Belle Helene” overture from Offenbach’s light opera, Smetana’s dances from “The Bartered Bride” and Victor Herbert’s “Romany Life,” which pictures gypsy life through music. Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” will create excitement, and music from the Broadway musical and 1972 film “Cabaret” brings sounds of an intimate nightclub setting to the stage. Offering a complete contrast – but always fun to hear – is Leroy Anderson’s “Fiddle Faddle.”
Fans of Eddie Fischer, Kate Smith and Paul Anka will remember the hit “Lady of Spain,” written by one of Britain’s most successful songwriters, Tolchard Evans. Another oldie is the instrumental hit of the late 1950s, Moe Koffman’s “Swinging Shepherd Blues.”
The Hopkins Park band shell is located behind the swimming pool at 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb. Bench seating is available or bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on the grass.
