Health reform decision doesn’t end local debate

DeKALB – With the landmark health care decision handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday, Kevin Poorten said it is time for Illinois lawmakers to roll up their sleeves.

Poorten, president and CEO of KishHealth System, said Illinois is “behind the eight ball” for getting the necessary insurance networks in place for Jan. 1, 2014, when all residents must have insurance. About 1.9 million Illinois residents are uninsured.

The major hurdle, he said, is setting up a health insurance exchange to allow people to enroll in state-regulated health care plans that tap into federal subsidies.
