CORTLAND – A spokeswoman confirmed that FBI agents were in Cortland on Tuesday conducting an ongoing criminal investigation.
Special Agent Joan Hyde at the FBI's Chicago office said she was unable to comment further on the investigation as no charges had been filed and no one had been arrested. She said that such investigations are common, and there is no reason for the community to be concerned.
An official with the Cortland Police Department said law enforcement were looking for a person they thought resided in the town, but it turned out the person did not reside there.
Cortland Police said they were not involved with Tuesday's search. Local support, they said, was provided by the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office could not immediately be reached for comment.
Several police were seen outside the Mobil Gas Station at 15 West Lincoln Highway. Employees there declined to comment.
