The inaugural Wine Tasting Under the Oaks, presented by the Big Rock Plowing Match Association, will feature five Illinois wineries: Waterman Winery, Willett’s Winery & Cellar, Fox Creek Vineyards, Hailey’s Winery and Vahling Vineyards.
The event will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at Plowman’s Park in Big Rock. Parking and entrance to the festival are free. Visit www.bigrockwinefest.com for directions to the park.
Wine-tasting wristbands can be purchased for $10, which includes a souvenir wine glass and five tastings. Additional tickets for the tastings can be purchased for $1 each and will be sold until 7:30 p.m. Patrons wishing to participate in the wine tasting must be 21 years or older with a valid ID. There will be a designated driver tent sponsored by Pepsi providing pop and water to those not participating in the tastings.
As a special treat for visitors to the festival, Art and Chelsea Jackson, chefs and owners of Pleasant House Bakery in Chicago, voted one of Chicago Tribune Dining Awards top new restaurants of 2012, will be the featured food vendor. The sample menu could include cheese and fruit plates, wine marinated and grilled chicken salad, smoked, slow roasted pulled pork sandwich with sweet potato chips and brick oven pizzas – plus some desserts. Art’s parents are longtime residents of Big Rock. For more information, visit www.pleasanthousebakery.com.
Musical entertainment will be provided by Dennis Owen and the Wooden Rockers and The Bluegrass Escape. Between sets, DJ Darrin Lee of Premier Entertainment will keep the sounds coming. Local artisans will offer their wares. Featured items include ceramic art tiles, themed wine products, wine glass candles, clay wine chiller decanters, handcrafted bottle art, baskets and jewelry.
