Municipal Band concert to celebrate Flag Day
The DeKalb Municipal Band presents the second concert of its 158th season of summer band concerts at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hopkins Park Band Shell. Featured vocalist is Larry Cooper, tenor. Flag Day will be celebrated with Elk’s Club presentation of an American Flag that has flown over the capital in Washington D.C., and Marilyn’s Majorette’s twirling to a patriotic medley of favorites.
Larry Cooper has performed in numerous opera, operetta, concert venues and oratorio performances. After graduating from North Central College, he was awarded a full scholarship to Northwestern University to study opera. He subsequently studied at the Volkwanghochschule in Essen-Werden, Germany, also under full scholarship. Cooper was engaged as Leading Tenor soloist with contracts in Trier, Regensburg, Cologne Opera Houses in Germany. He was engaged as a guest artist for the Eutin Summer Festival, and maintained guest contracts In Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, and other cities in both Europe and the U.S. His repertoire includes classical, as well as contemporary works. The tenor will perform “Funiculi Funicula” “Serenade” and “O Solo Mio.”
George M. Cohan’s “You’re a Grand Old Flag” opens the program, followed by “June is Bustin’ Out All Over.” The brilliant and flashy “Festive Overture” sets the pace for Sousa’s “Washington Post.” Music from Broadway, Carmen Miranda’s “Tico Tico,” and “Golden Gate” march will have feet tapping. Tuesday’s program promises something for everyone including patriotic music, marches, Dixieland, and Lennon and McCartney‘s “Yesterday.”
Visions of a beautiful women in a fancy gown, being guided around a grand ballroom, come readily to mind with Leroy Anderson’s version of the Viennese Waltz is “Belle of the Ball.” The Celtic folk tune, “Fantasia on an Irish Ballad” is new to the Hopkins Park, and will transport listeners to the green Irish countryside. Marilyn’s Majorettes, with their display of marching and twirling to a patriotic medley, is the crowd-pleasing finale.
The Hopkins Park band shell is located behind the swimming pool at 1403 Sycamore Road, DeKalb. Bench seating is available or bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on the grass.
