Pensions nudge educators to retire

Larry Bolles believes he could have put in five more years at Northern Illinois University.

But the state’s unstable pension system made him think twice about staying on board that long.

“Everything’s on the table,” said Bolles, who recently retired as the director of the Office of Student Conduct after 34 years with the university. “For individuals like me, it just makes more sense to come on out after 30-plus years.”
