Broken part to blame for stalled train in DeKalb

DeKALB – A train was stopped on the railroad tracks in downtown DeKalb for more than 20 minutes Tuesday because of a broken part.

DeKalb Police Sgt. Tom Petit said a broken part caused a Union Pacific train headed east to stall along the tracks about 12:45 p.m. Union Pacific workers fixed the part within about 25 minutes.

The stopped train caused brief traffic jams at downtown DeKalb intersections, including Fourth Street and Lincoln Highway. Petit said DeKalb officers directed traffic at areas that tend to get busy when people avoid the train tracks: Pearl and Gurler streets and Peace Road and Lincoln Highway.
