Accident closes I-88 for hours

KANE COUNTY – Interstate 88 was closed for several hours Thursday between Peace Road in DeKalb and Route 47 in Kane County as authorities dealt with a multivehicle accident.

An accident was reported at 3:41 p.m. at mile marker 104 eastbound, which is near Dauberman and Watson roads, according to Illinois State Police.

Three semitrailers were slowing with traffic, but the driver of a van did not slow, striking the rear of one semitrailer and causing a chain reaction, according to a news release from ISP. The driver of the van and two of the three motor vehicle drivers were transported to area hospitals.

Ambulances, fire departments, police and tow trucks assisted on the scene.

By 7 p.m., all lanes traveling west were open, and one lane headed east was open, according to ISP. The crash is under investigation. ISP could not confirm there was a dust storm at the time of the accident.

Traffic jammed on the tollway in the aftermath of the accident, and motorists were asked to use Peace Road, Route 38 and Route 47 as a detour.
