Prep Roundup: Sycamore softball wins on senior day

The Sycamore softball team swept Sandwich on senior day to close out the regular season  Saturday. Sycamore defeated the Indians, 4-3, in the first game on a walk-off double by Brittany Huber and 9-3 in the second.

Keri Treml got the win in the first game. She gave up one earned run on seven hits, struck out six and walked none. Lyndsey Coddington was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored. Huber was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Tristyn Criswell was 1 for 3.

In the second game, Taylor Zak got the win. She struck out four and walked one.

Criswell went 2 for 3, while Huber was 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Meranda Brashears was 2 for 4. Sycamore is 16-19.

“The team did a nice job sending the seniors off on a positive note on senior day,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said. “Lyndsey Coddington and Brit Huber did a tremendous job in Game 1 stepping up in the seventh to put something together to win the game for us. Game 2, we came out a lot more confident with the bats and got production out of everyone in the lineup. We ran the bases extremely well and put a lot of pressure on the defense.”

Callaghan paces Knights: Lanie Callaghan was 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs in Kaneland’s 8-0 win against Rosary. The Knights are 29-6. Delani Vest got the win, striking out seven and walking one in five innings.

BOYS TENNIS

Kulma wins sectional: DeKalb junior Matt Kulma won the Ottawa Sectional and advanced to the state tournament. Kulma won the championship match over Reo Hammers from LaSalle-Peru, 6-4, 6-3. DeKalb finished third as a team behind Ottawa and L-P.

BASEBALL

Spartans beat Pretzels: Sycamore defeated Freeport, 5-3. Colin Eggleson got the win, allowing three runs in five innings. Nathan Haacker got the save. Haacker also went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Spartans (19-12).

Matt Godinsky was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and a double.

Barbs get a win: Jeremy Karasewski went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run in DeKalb’s 7-3 win against Elgin. Brian Sisler was 2 for 3 with a run scored for the Barbs (16-15-1).

“We played great defense for the most part,” DeKalb coach Jake Howells said. “We got some timely hitting [Saturday], which was nice, too.”

Knights win easily: Kaneland defeated West Aurora, 7-2. Ray Barry was 2 for 3 with a run scored, two walks and two stolen bases while Mike Tattoni was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases for the Knights (24-9).
