PREP ROUNDUP: Burger saves own win for Hiawatha
Tyler Burger managed to pick up the win and the save in the Hiawatha baseball team’s 12-11 win against Earlville-Leland in the Class 1A Hinckley-Big Rock Regional quarterfinals on Monday.
Burger threw the first five innings, gave up two earned runs and struck out two for the Hawks (17-10). Then the Hiawatha bullpen gave up eight runs in the sixth, prompting Burger to go back to the mound in the seventh to save the game. Burger retired the final three batters on only seven pitches.
Hiawatha advanced to the regional semifinals at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Somonauk at Kenny Field in Big Rock.
Allen Letterer had three RBIs for the Hawks, who committed seven errors.
Barbs fall to Streator: DeKalb lost, 8-3, to Streator. The Barbs (14-14-1) managed only five hits against the Bulldogs.
Jeremy Karasewski had two hits, while Zack Price took the loss on the mound. He gave up seven earned runs, struck out one and walked two.
Knights win shutout: Kaneland got two goals from Brittany Olson, and the Knights closed out the regular season with a 4-0 win against Streator.
Courtney Diddell had two assists for the Knights (12-5-1, 7-2-1 Northern Illinois Big 12). Jess Coia and Madi Jurcenko each had a goal.
Barbs fall to potential regional opponent: Burlington Central beat DeKalb, 10-2, with both teams sitting most of their regulars. The Rockets are the top seed in the Class 3A Burlington Central Regional, which begins next week. DeKalb is seeded second.
“It’s almost like we didn’t want to give away too much information to each other,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “It was kind of like a JV game in a sense.”
Kaylin Kennedy took the loss in the circle for the Barbs (17-11).
T’wolves’ season ends: Indian Creek lost to Paw Paw, 7-4, in nine innings in the quarterfinals of the Class 1A Indian Creek Regional. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 4, and added three in the top of the ninth.
