PREP ROUNDUP: Sycamore’s Kwaza, relays heading to state

At Friday’s Class 2A Sterling girls track sectional, Sycamore senior Lake Kwaza won the 100-meter dash and qualified for state, running a time of 12.8 seconds.

Joining Kwaza at state will be Sycamore’s 4x800 relay team, which finished fourth in a state-qualifying time of 9:57.6, and the 4x100 relay team, which took second in 49.95 seconds.

Kaneland finished fourth in the meet with 48 points, and qualified three individuals and two relays to next weekend’s state meet in Charleston.

Lauren Zick won the 400 in 58.84 seconds. Jennifer Howland met the state qualifying time in the 3,200, finishing in 11:45.37. Sydney Strang met the state qualifying mark in the 800, taking fourth place in 2:21.23.

Kaneland’s 4x800 relay team (sixth in 9:58.23) and 4x400 relay (second in 4:06.99) also qualified for state.

Genoa-Kingston’s Danielle Neisendorf won the high jump, clearing 5-2, to become the lone Cog to qualify for state.


BASEBALL

Hawks play spoiler to H-BR:
Hiawatha defeated Hinckley-Big Rock, 4-2, to keep the Royals from sharing the Little Ten Conference title with Somonauk. The Bobcats won it outright over H-BR (20-10, 14-2 LTC).

Nick Doolittle hit a two-out, two-RBI single in the sixth to give the Hawks the eventual winning runs. Doolittle finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a walk. Will Corn picked up the win on the mound in relief. Corn threw 12⁄3 innings for the Hawks (10-16, 8-8 LTC) and struck out three.

Indians fall in 5:
Sandwich lost to Herscher, 14-1, in five innings. P.J. Crotty was 2 for 3 for the Indians (13-18).



SOFTBALL

Knights win easily:
Kaneland cruised to a 15-5 five-inning victory against Plainfield North. Alexis Villarreal allowed 10 hits and struck out one for the Knights (27-5).

Indians lose tough one: Sandwich lost a 1-0 game to Herscher. Morgan Murphy took the loss for the Indians (11-18). Jordan Kipper had a double.
