DeKalb girls track 4th in NI Big 12 Conference meet

The DeKalb girls track team finished in fourth place at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference track meet on Friday, scoring 66 points.

Jaylaan Slaughter won the 400-meter dash, setting a meet record, in a time of 57.14 seconds. She took second in the 100 hurdles.

Kelsey Schrader was second in the mile in 5:11. The 4x800 relay team of Schrader, Danielle Dlabal, Desa Diedrich and Monica York was second, setting a school record in 9:49. Jasmine Brown was second in the triple jump with a mark of 35 feet, seven inches.

“Overall, we did really well, excited about a lot of the girls’ performances,” DeKalb coach Carolyn Smrz said.

Smrz said Kaneland finished fifth and Sycamore was sixth. No individual results for those teams were submitted by press time.

BOYS TRACK

Knights tie for 1st at Kane County: Kaneland tied for first with Geneva with 74 points at the Kane County Meet at West Aurora. Nate Dyer won the shot put with a throw of 50 feet. Dylan Nauert won the 300 hurdles in 40.19 seconds.

Spartans 7th, DeKalb 10th at invite: At the Northern Illinois Invitational at Hononegah, Sycamore took sixth place with 59 points and DeKalb was 11th with eight points.

Sycamore went 1-2 in the 800-meter run. David Rudd was first in 1:58.

Sycamore freshman Dion Hooker was second in the 100-meter dash in 11.18 seconds.

BASEBALL

Hawks upend Paw Paw: Behind four hits from Nick Doolittle, Hiawatha beat Paw Paw, 11-8. The Hawks (6-14, 5-7 Little Ten) also got three RBIs apiece from Ed Canchola and Mike Mercado.

SOFTBALL

Hawks win by forfeit: Hiawatha defeated Paw Paw by forfeit, as Paw Paw had only eight players. The Hawks are 11-10 and 7-5 in the Little Ten.

GIRLS SOCCER

Royals win blowout: Hinckley-Big Rock defeated Rochelle, 7-0. Katilin Phillips had three goals for the Royals (12-7-3).

Andrea Binkley scored twice and Kim Weissinger had a goal and an assist.

BASS FISHING

Barbs catch a big one: After the first day of the state bass fishing tournament, DeKalb sits in fourth place. The Barbs caught five fish, including the biggest fish of the day, belonging to Anthony Kriese, who caught a bass weighing 6 pounds, 14 ounces.
