PREP ROUNDUP: Sycamore baseball blanks Rochelle

The Sycamore baseball team got two RBIs from Nick Sullivan and the Spartans defeated Rochelle, 7-0, on Thursday.

Cole Nelson got the win on the mound for the Spartans (14-6, 6-3 Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference). Nathan Haacker went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

“I think we put ourselves in a good position next week,” Sycamore coach Jason Cavanaugh said. “We’ve got Kaneland. We’re excited about that and we’ll see how we play next week.”

Barbs find a win: DeKalb defeated Morris, 8-6. The Barbs (10-9, 4-5 NI Big 12) stole nine bases in the victory. Jared Johnson was 4 for 4 with four runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. Brian Sisler went 2 for 3 with two steals, two RBIs and a run scored.

“The kids really stayed together and stayed positive,” DeKalb coach Jake Howells said.

Knights drop a game: Kane-land committed four errors in a 4-2 loss to Yorkville. Bryan Van Bogaert took the loss for the Knights (14-8, 7-2 NI Big 12). He struck out six and walked two. Quinn Buschbacher went 2 for 4 for Kaneland.

Ruh leads Royals: Mitch Ruh had a home run, a double and seven RBIs to lead Hinckley-Big Rock to an 11-1, five-inning victory against Newark. Jake Shrader got the win on the mound for the Royals (16-9, 10-1 Little Ten Conference). Shrader struck out five and allowed just one hit.

“Mitch Ruh’s been on fire,” H-BR coach Matt Olson said. “It was a monster home run.”

Krischel throws no-no: Jake Krischel threw a no-hitter for Somonauk as the Bobcats defeated Serena, 6-0. Krischel struck out 11 and walked two in the no-no. Danny Heerhold went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a stolen base for the Bobcats (18-3, 10-1 LTC).

“Jake had his good stuff today and I couldn’t be any more proud of the job he has done for this team this season,” Somonauk coach Bob Honkala said.

Harvell strikes out 10: Indian Creek defeated Paw Paw, 6-1. Ivan Harvell pitched a complete game, struck out 10 and gave up just one hit. David Boehne went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Dane Fleming had two RBIs for the Timberwolves (10-12, 8-5 LTC).

Cogs falter: Genoa-Kingston lost to Harvard, 7-6. Mike Murphy took the loss for G-K (4-16, 2-4 Big Northern Conference). Murphy struck out seven and walked seven in six innings. Mason Lucca went 1 for 4 while Matt Rasmussen was 1 for 3 with two runs scored.

“We’ve very inconsistent,” G-K coach Josh Latimer said. “We left way too many runners on base tonight.”

SOFTBALL

Knights overcome for victory: Kaneland committed three errors but managed to beat Morris, 4-2. Delani Vest threw a complete game, striking out four and walking two for the Knights (22-5, 6-0 NI Big 12).

T’wolves fall in extras: Indian Creek lost to Paw Paw, 5-3, in eight innings.

GIRLS SOCCER

Knights win easily: Courtney Diddell scored twice and had an assist in Kaneland’s 7-0 win against Rochlle. Taylor White added a goal for the Knights (7-3-1, 3-1-1 NI Big 12).

Sommerfeld has big day for IC: Christina Sommerfeld scored all four goals in Indian Creek’s 4-0 victory against Hall. The Timberwolves advanced to 5-8-1.

Cogs lose to Rockets: Burlington Central beat Genoa-Kingston, 4-0. The Cogs fell to 7-8 overall and 3-4 in the BNC.

“I am very pleased with the way we played tonight against a very strong team,” G-K coach Randy Tate said. “I saw some really good things happening on the field. We were doing a lot of the rights things, but they continued to push and finally cracked our defense.”

BOYS TRACK

Carls paces H-BR: At a five-team meet at Seneca, Hinckley-Big Rock’s Mack Carls won the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 7.5 inches. He finished second in the discus (127-4). Mike Bayler won the 200-meter dash in 24.36 seconds and took third in the triple jump (38-2).

Hall paces T’wolves: At a six-team meet at Rockford Lutheran, Indian Creek’s Andrew Hall finished second in the discus (133-3) and shot put (39-9). Jake Gullstrand was second in the 200, finishing in 23.58 seconds.

GIRLS TRACK

Thuestad sets record: At a triangular meet at Rockford Lutheran, Indian Creek finished second. Kate Thuestad set a meet record in winning the shot put with a throw of 33-8.5. Emma Goodrich won the discus after a throw of 94-2.5 and Ariel Russell won the long jump with a 14-2.5 mark.

Cogs fifth at R-B: At the Richmond-Burton Rocket Relays, the Genoa-Kingston discus relay team of Jenny Puckett, Misty Turville and Leah Judd all set personal bests as the three Cogs combined for a distance of 186 feet, 1 inch, for a third-place finish. The Cogs finished fifth with 62.5 points.

GIRLS BADMINTON

Barbs sweep: DeKalb blanked Fenton, 15-0. The Barbs lost just two games during the entire meet. Brooke Wilson won her match at No. 1 singles, 21-19, 21-16. Jaci Nguyen won at No. 2 singles, 21-9, 21-14.

Tristan Draper had little trouble winning at No. 4 singles, 21-5, 21-13.
