Quinn names new head of Public Health Department

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn has picked a doctor with a background in disease control to head the state's Department of Public Health.

Quinn's office said Dr. La Mar Hasbrouck comes to Illinois from New York, where he served as public health director and commissioner of mental health. Before that, Hasbrouck spent 11 years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention where he was part of the epidemic intelligence service. He's worked to reduce and eliminate diseases in several countries, including efforts to eradicate polio in Bangladesh.

Quinn on Monday also appointed David Vaught to head the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. Vaught has led the Governor's Office of Management and Budget since 2009. Quinn Chief of Staff Jerry Stermer will serve as acting director at the budget office.
