The DeKalb baseball team overcame an early three-run deficit to defeat Jefferson, 10-3. Matt Hoyle went 4 for 4 with two runs scored. Trenton Sopko was 2 for 3 with a walk for the Barbs (3-0-1).
On the mound, Jeremy Karasewski got the win, going five innings and allowing seven hits and three walks while striking out four.
"It was good to see our guys stick with our approach, not panic and find a way to wear down their pitcher," DeKalb coach Jake Howells said.
Spartans split: Sycamore lost the first game of a doubleheader to Elgin, 7-4, before rallying to win the second, 10-8 in eight innings. Nathan Haacker was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs in the second game and Matt Godinsky got the win in relief for the Spartans (1-2).
Bobcats put up 13: Somonauk's Danny Heerhold went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two stolen bases in the Bobcats' 13-5 victory against Spring Valley Hall. Pitcher Dalton Morris got the win for Somonauk (5-1).
Kowalski pitches Barbs to win: Sophomore Katie Kowalski struck out 17 batters and DeKalb defeated Larkin, 3-0. Kowalski walked one and gave up just one hit. Hannah Walter went 2 for 3 for the Barbs. Tori Voorhis had two RBIs. The Barbs won the second game of the doubleheader, 6-5, to advance to 5-0 on the season.
Spartans fall by 1: Sycamore got three hits and an RBI from Meranda Brashears, but fell to Woodstock North, 4-3. Pitcher Abby Foulk gave up three earned runs on seven hits, struck out 10 and walked three. Foulk also went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Lyndsey Coddington went 2 for 3. Sycamore is 3-3.
Knights win shutout: Delani Vest threw a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts to lead Kaneland to an 8-0 win against Oswego. Sarah Kitz went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI for the Knights (1-3).
Barbs tie Freeport: Maddie Krmenec scored five minutes in for DeKalb in its 1-1 tie against Freeport. The Pretzels scored 15 minutes into the second half to tie up the match. Kelli Cardine assisted on Krmenec's goal for the Barbs (0-0-1).
"Both squads played a real solid match, and it was a good game of possession," DeKalb coach Phil Rouse said.
Bobcats set top times: At the Illinois Prep Top Times meet, Somonauk's 4x800-meter relay team of Jamie Towle, Natalie Rabe, Emily Clark and Lauren Zoeske took ninth place with a time of 10:31.
Barbs take 6th: DeKalb finished in sixth place at the Glenbard East Invite, finishing with 8.5 points. York won with 39.5 points. DeKalb's No. 1 doubles team of Brooke Wilson and Anna Potsic and its No. 3 doubles team of Kodi Underwood and Cassie Lexa both finished in third.
"They're playing well in spurts, we just need to work on the consistency," DeKalb coach Duane Cowley said. "But I'm very happy with their play."
