Sycamore library’s Pi Day makes math easier to stomach

SYCAMORE – Wednesday was a little sweeter for math enthusiasts who celebrated Albert Einstein’s birthday by eating pie to celebrate Pi Day.

Pi – a number that represents the relationship between a circle’s diameter and its circumference – shares the same first three digits – 3.14 – as the date of March 14, which is Einstein’s birthday. To celebrate, the Sycamore Public Library hosted its first Pi Day celebration, complete with a pie-tasting contest, a pie-eating contest and a visit from an Einstein impersonator.

Sarah Tobias, executive director of the library, said she geared the library’s programming more toward math and science, and she thought Pi Day would be a good way to incorporate some math lessons into a fun activity.
