Caution: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
There is so much to know about more than 100 different types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
For time's sake, we will only focus on 40 strands that can infect the male/female genitals, mouth and throat and cause cancer; these 40 strands are called non-visible HPV. The most common sexually transmitted disease or sexually transmitted infections are these strands of HPV. These types of genital HPV are spread through vaginal/anal intercourse or oral to genital contact.
Homosexuals and heterosexuals can contract HPV. Pregnant females with HPV also can infect their babies. With this occurrence, the baby will get Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP). As the child grows, this will turn into juvenile onset Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (JORRP).
In order to be diagnosed with these strands, males need a blood test and females would need a pap smear with a culture test. Just because a person is infected with one strand of HPV doesn’t mean they cannot get any of the other strands.
Sometimes, fortunately, the human immune system will ward off HPV on its own. Unfortunately, when the body does not ward it off and non-visible HPV goes undiagnosed and untreated, it can lead to the following cancers: cervical, vaginal, vulvar, penile, anal and oropharyngeal (mouth/throat).
What can sexually active people do about non-visible HPV? Get tested. Vaccinations are available, although there is not much research to support effectiveness; Cervarix is for females and Gardasil is for females and males. Over a six-month period, three shots are given.
