Prairie Flower: VietNow Vigil
To the Editor:
The DeKalb County Chapter of VietNow Vigil Committee wishes to thank all who made the 24-hour vigil Nov. 5-6 at the courthouse memorial so meaningful.
It was 25 years ago Nov. 11 that we dedicated the fallen soldiers’ memorial, and we have watched over it every year since.
We would like to thank the Rev. Dean Pierce from the DeKalb Wesleyan Church and chaplain of the DeKalb Fire Department. Thanks to St. Mary’s Scout Troop 40 for changing the flags at the courthouse and for leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Thanks to Sycamore Mayor Ken Mundy for his welcome to veterans and the community. Thank you to Judge Kurt Klein for his memorable keynote speech.
A special thank you to the organizations that took part in the wreath-laying ceremony: VietNow National Agent Orange, VietNow National POW, DeKalb County VietNow, Genoa American Legion, Sycamore American Legion Auxiliary, Sycamore Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Genoa VFW Auxiliary, DeKalb VFW, Genoa VFW, Sycamore VFW, Sycamore Sons of the American Legion, and Genoa Sons of the American Legion.
The memorial was beautifully remembered.
Thanks to state Rep. Robert Pritchard for his tribute about the life of a veteran. Thank you to state Sen. Brad Burzynski for his wonderful rendition of “God Bless the USA.”
Thanks to all of those who stood watch during the 24 hours.
A special thank you to the Daily Chronicle for a great story on the vigil.
