Prairie Flower: Annual DeKalb County Community Spelling Bee

Published: Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010 5:30 a.m. CDT

To the Editor:

On behalf of Altrusa International of DeKalb/Sycamore and the Daily Chronicle, thank you for your support of our 11th annual DeKalb County Community Spelling Bee.

This year’s winner was the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra team sponsored by Heal Insurance. Second place went to the Sycamore Ladies Literary Society team sponsored by the Daily Chronicle.

A special thank you goes to the Verizon Foundation for its generous support of this community event from the very beginning.

Whether you were a team sponsor, a team speller, a program sponsor or a raffle donor, your participation helped to make this year’s event a huge success.

This year, more than $10,000 was raised to support literacy projects throughout our community. A portion of the proceeds will be placed in the Literacy Fund at the DeKalb County Community Foundation. Altrusa will continue to distribute a portion back to the community with mini-grants for various literacy projects, and the Daily Chronicle will receive a portion to support its Newspapers in Education program.

Mark your calendar for next year’s DeKalb County Community Spelling Bee, which will be held Oct. 20.
