DeKALB – DeKalb Mayor Kris Povlsen said Thursday he plans to form a task force to monitor housing in DeKalb.

The Task Force for Safe and Quality Housing will ensure that housing units in the area are up to code and safe to occupy, Povlsen said. It is important that the city make public safety a high priority, he said during a news conference Thursday afternoon.

Povlsen said he is looking for anyone who has a stake in property to serve on the task force. This might include residents, students, landlords, business leaders, or other community-minded residents, he said.

The task force’s main goal will be to ensure safe neighborhoods in DeKalb and provide high-quality housing.

Povlsen said tenant screenings and background checks will take place to assure that individuals living in the community are not criminals. He said he hopes to have the task force formed in the next couple of weeks.
