Kish worker served as peer reviewer

Leslie Ciaccio, coordinator of the therapeutic massage program at Kishwaukee College, served as a peer reviewer for the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation in August.

COMTA accredits educational institutions and programs offering instruction in massage therapy and bodywork and was established to maintain the quality and integrity of the profession. The Kishwaukee College therapeutic massage program is accredited by COMTA. The accreditation process is rigorous and COMTA utilizes peer reviewers as part of their on-site evaluation process. Peer reviewers are selected from active COMTA members who demonstrate a thorough understanding of COMTA accreditation standards.

Ciaccio spent several days in August visiting the therapeutic massage program in a private educational institution Ohio. COMTA flew her to the site; she was accompanied by the executive director of COMTA. Ciaccio was responsible for providing the commission with verification of the documentation and practices of the institution as it relates to accreditation standards.

“It was an interesting experience being on the other side of the accreditation process,” Ciaccio said in a recent news release. “I came away with a clearer view of what COMTA really looks for in an accreditation visit.”

Kishwaukee College’s therapeutic massage program received its initial accreditation from COMTA in 2001 and was re-accredited in 2006.
