11th Biking with Beanzie ride to take place July 19

Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club of DeKalb is sponsoring its 11th annual Biking with Beanzie recreational bicycle ride on July 19. Ride distance options include 23-, 46-, 64- and 101-mile routes that cater to a variety of skill levels.

These bike routes take cyclists through various areas of rural DeKalb, Lee and LaSalle county countryside that is generally flat with some areas of rolling terrain to provide some challenges for the more experienced riders.

The 46-mile route winds through scenic Shabbona Lake State Park with the 64- and 101-mile routes also traveling on toward the windmill farm located west Interstate 39 near Paw Paw.

The 101-mile route actually travels through the wind farm. All roads are well paved, lightly traveled and posted with humorous signs and ride information. Rest and refreshment stops, as well as plenty of friendly SAG wagon support, will be available along all routes. Post-ride activities will include access to the DeKalb High School indoor swimming pool, including showers and snacks such as ice cold watermelon.

Biking with Beanzie starts and ends at DeKalb High School, 1515 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb. On-site registration is between 6:30-10 a.m. on the day of the ride, and the ride ends at the registration site at 4 p.m.

Registration is available online or via mail. The registration fee is $20; registration after July 8 and on site is $25. Registration is free for children/teens 15 and younger when riding with a parent or guardian. However, if a T-shirt is desired for a child/teen rider, there is a charge of $10. The regular registration fee includes ride maps, rest stops, SAG support, a Beanzie T-shirt and post-ride activities. Bike shop services will also be available at the registration site.

Contributions and proceeds from Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club of DeKalb’s Biking with Beanzie bike ride will help fund future pathway projects, greenway projects and other community service projects throughout DeKalb County.
